April 2024 Update: This model is now superseded by the Widex SmartRIC hearing aid range.
Launched at the beginning of September 2022, Widex Moment Sheer hearing aids are their new flagship product and supersede the original Moment hearing aid range. However, not completely, as this new range is currently only available in an RIC model - unlike Moment, which is available in BTE and ITE device options too.
Widex Moment Sheer is designed to further enhance the hearing aid wearer's lifestyle and even well-being. With advanced hardware and software technologies - Widex promises to deliver a more supported hearing solution that will engage with the wearer and improve well-being.
There are many complexities to hearing loss and no two ears are the same, but the desire from the patient and the focus is still the same as it always has been - to deliver the best natural sound. This is because the need for natural sound is universal.
The hearing aid wearer's first-fit experience was one of the main focuses of this digital hearing aid launch. Widex understands that the "right-fit" hearing aid experience can often be the answer between a good start to a hearing journey and better hearing or not.
A bad first experience can leave you feeling like you made a mistake or not confident about wearing hearing aids - however, a good first experience will give you the hearing you need and greatly improve the quality of your life.
Widex believes that it is possible to have great and natural sound from the first time you wear your hearing aids. Together with their developed PureSound technology (which they call their sound philosophy), Widex has launched Moment Sheer. Widex Moment Sheer is designed to further enhance the hearing aid wearer's lifestyle and even well-being.
With advanced hardware and software technologies - Widex promises to deliver a more supported hearing solution that will engage with the wearer and improve well-being. This launch is effectively, the original Moment hearing aid, but better.
So, why do these hearing aids not sound like hearing aids? Generally, the sound you hear is out of sync with past hearing aids. Due to the processed sound reaching the eardrum a split second later than the sound that travels directly through or around the hearing aid's ear-tip. However, in reality, the ‘tinny’ sound Widex is referring to is a generalisation.
Why is this? It's rare that people can detect digital echo in hearing aids and most who have worn any Moment devices can’t detect the difference in speed from their past ones. In short, trialists of this new product have enjoyed the natural sound quality (Widex states 95% thought PureSound was more natural) - so they must be doing something right!
You can benefit from streaming directly with 2.4 GHz Bluetooth connectivity from both Android and iOS devices to your hearing aids.

Widex states that PureSound allows the wearer to access more of a true sound than other hearing aids. It is a technology designed to assist the wearer in experiencing a natural soundscape and identifying sound positioning more easily.
But, how does it achieve this? In a nutshell, this hearing aid includes ZeroDelay, which is a super fast dual sound processing system that eradicates delay-based hearing aid distortion for a more clear, seamless and natural listening experience (which they call PureSound).
PureSound technology was created to combat one of the common hurdles for hearing aid users. This is adapting to a new hearing aid, as some devices are said to sound artificial. The artificial sound is apparently due to when sound enters the ear canal through or around an ear-tip and then joins to the sound from the hearing aid. The time delay between the direct and hearing aid sound creates a distortion.
Widex's PureSound processes sound 8-20 times faster, so hearing aid wearers don't experieince the 'tinny' effect which can be found in other devices. However, as I said earlier, in reality, the ‘tinny’ sound Widex is referring to is a generalisation. Why is this? It's rare that people can detect digital echo in aids and most who have worn Moment Sheer aids can’t detect the difference in speed from their past devices.
Adding to the better 'first-fit' experience, Widex has created a new TruAcoustic calculation model. This is simply designed to give a more personalised sound using earmold acoustics and unique ear canal characteristics to determine your best hearing aid fitting. What are the benefits of this? This hearing aid fitting calculation process gives you access to a more natural sound that's accurate and personable in all listening environments.
In reality, this technology is still in its infancy and there still might be a few trips to the audiologist to get it right - which is normal when using a new hearing device. However, it is still providing a huge leap in the right direction for a more natural sound for hearing aid wearers.
How does it achieve this? It is a clever intelligent algorithm that is available for all initial hearing aid fitting consultations. This is available for both experienced and for people who are wearing hearing aids for the first time. It combines and optimises the earmold statistics with the unique ear canal characteristics to assist in a better first-fit in all processes and gain settings.
Where Widex Moment started, Sheer picks up from when we look at the beneficial healthable technologies within the device. Widex commented that Sheer goes beyond just healthy hearing, but healthy living that will assist and support the hurdles those with hearing loss often face everyday.
Sheer includes an enhanced AI personlisation tool - the My Sound 2.0 feature (offering 10X more comparisons) in the Moment app. This feature combines the AI technology with the hearing aid wearer's intent, so you can hear exactly how you want to in all listening situations.
How does this help my hearing loss? It means that you can choose what sound you want to focus on or enhance in the moment and depending on your environment. This is done by using A/B comparisons that are recommended automatically by Widex using wearer's preferences worldwide.
This new feature was created to give you access to inner peace, reduce anxiety and soothe the mind by using relaxing sounds for better well-being - even if you don't suffer from tinnitus. How does this help you and your hearing? Because calming sounds are known to relieve stress, Widex's fractal sounds, together with the Zen tinnitus therapies, generate soothing and meditative sounds that are seamlessly changing and are never repeated.
We think this would also help ease the listening fatigue, as people with hearing loss are challenged all the time with hearing, so this type of fatigue, unfortunately, hits them harder and faster. Why is this? Those with hearing loss are known to have fewer stimuli than those with normal hearing, so it increases the symptom and episodes of listening fatigue.
For example, SoundRelax will help you wind down and relax after the stresses of a full day of meetings that require focused concentration and listening.

If you have a significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation. The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the miniscule time delays as well as the difference in loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source. Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification required. A phenomena known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect. High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore if someone is talking on your unaided side you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction. The brain has it’s own built in noise reduction which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering it out.
Sound quality. We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.
For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up.
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most a 30 minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in behind the ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.
For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.
The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex and it is really not that straightforward.
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear are split into frequency bands or channels and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at, it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Hearing aids are easily lost, misplaced or damaged and typically are one of the most expensive personal possessions an individual can own. We offer hearing aid warranty cover for £80 per year per aid. Find out more here
