Details & Features

Unitron Smile Moxi 7 Hearing Aids Overview

The Unitron Moxi Smile S-R 7 is a Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) hearing aid built on Unitron's Smile platform, and it sits in a practical middle ground for people who want reliable, automatic performance across a varied day without paying for the full feature set of the premium 9.

The AI-trained Integra OS recognises six listening environments and adjusts automatically as your surroundings change. For anyone whose day moves between quieter settings and moderate background noise, that automatic adaptation covers most of what daily listening actually involves without requiring you to think about it.

Where the 7 differs from the 9 is in how it handles the most demanding listening situations. If busy restaurants and loud multi-speaker environments are a regular part of your life, the 9 is worth the additional investment. If they are not, the 7 delivers capable, well-rounded performance at a more accessible price point.

Launched on the Smile platform in May 2025, the Moxi S-R 7 is rechargeable, Bluetooth-enabled, and available through our HCPC-registered audiologists either at a local clinic or during a free home visit.

Quick product highlights:

  • Rechargeable: Fully charges in 3–4 hours
  • Technology: Features advanced speech intelligibility
  • Connectivity: Standard Bluetooth compatibility
  • Suitable for: Mild, moderate, and severe hearing loss
  • Fitting options: Compatible with domes, canal moulds, and various types of earmolds

Key technical features

Pinna Effect 2:  This clever feature mimics how the natural shape of your ear picks up and pinpoints sound. Imagine you’re strolling through the local park and someone calls your name, you'll instantly know where it’s coming from, making your hearing feel more natural and intuitive.

Double Tap Control:  Got your hands full in the kitchen or carrying shopping bags? A quick tap on the hearing aid lets you answer calls, pause streaming, or hang up – all without touching your phone.

AI-trained Integra OS:  This smart operating system learns to recognise 6 different listening situations. Picture heading from a quiet corner shop into a bustling high street and then onto the Tube – your hearing aids automatically adapt to each of those soundscapes, so you’re not left fiddling with settings.

Integra OS Automation System:  Automatically tailors your hearing experience in a wide range of settings, including:

  • Conversation in Quiet
  • Conversation in Noise
  • Conversation in Small Groups
  • Music
  • Quiet
  • General Noise

AutoFocus 360:  Perfect for a dinner party or family get-together, this feature locks onto speech from any direction and reduces other background noise, so you can follow what’s being said without having to keep turning towards the speaker.

Automatic HyperFocus:  Ideal for noisy restaurants or packed pubs, HyperFocus sharpens speech in front of you while softening all the competing noise around – so even when chatter is flying, you won’t miss the conversation.

IP68 Rating:  These hearing aids are resistant to water, dust, and moisture – whether you’re caught in a sudden downpour or just doing the washing up.

AI Dome Proposer:  Getting the right fit is important. The AI Dome Proposer uses thousands of fitting patterns to recommend the most comfortable and acoustically effective dome from the start, saving you time and hassle.

Connectivity and colours available

Stay connected with ‘Made For All’ and universal Bluetooth, the Moxi Smile S-R 7 keeps you connected. You can stream music, answer calls hands-free, and switch between two devices – like your smartphone and tablet.

  • More reliable, clearer calls – Ideal when you’re chatting while cooking or out for a walk.
  • Extended range – Stay connected even if your phone’s upstairs and you’re downstairs putting the kettle on.
  • Up to 6x more wireless power for better streaming quality.
  • The Smile S-R 7 comes in a contemporary range of colours, including Amber, Espresso, Charcoal, Platinum, Pewter, and Sand – so whether you prefer something subtle or something stylish, there’s a shade for you.

Compatible accessories, app, and battery life

  • Remote Control – Discreetly adjust volume in a quiet library or during a film at home.
  • PartnerMic – Clip it onto someone you’re chatting with in a noisy setting like a pub or cafe for direct, clearer sound.
  • TV Connector – Stream your favourite shows straight to your hearing aids – no need to turn up the volume.
  • Phonak Roger Microphones – Ideal for meetings, lectures or lively group chats where speech clarity really matters.
  • Battery life - Enjoy up to 20 hours of battery life, even with streaming. Thanks to the built-in lithium-ion battery, there’s no need to hassle with disposable batteries. Simply place your Moxi S-R in its charger overnight, and it’ll be ready to go the next day.
  • The app - Easily fine-tune your hearing experience on the go with the Remote Plus app.. Adjust volume, balance, and tone - including bass, mids, and treble - in real time to personalise your sound just the way you like it.

Rechargeability

Forget changing tiny batteries; the Moxi Smile S-R 7 is rechargeable and comes with two charging options, and a full charge takes roughly 3 hours, giving you a full day of listening and streaming.  Here are the options:

  • The standard desktop charger – Perfect for the bedside table.
  • The Charger Go – Ideal for weekends away or keeping in your bag when you’re on the move.

Who is the Unitron Smile Moxi 7 suited to?

The Moxi 7 is a strong fit for anyone who wants a reliable hearing aid that handles a varied day without constant manual adjustment, but whose listening doesn't regularly take them into the most demanding environments. If your day moves between quieter settings, one-to-one conversations, and moderate background noise, the six listening environments and automatic processing will cover most of what your day actually involves.

It is particularly well-suited to people who want Bluetooth connectivity as part of their daily routine. Streaming calls, music, and television audio directly to your hearing aids is straightforward, and the hands-free functionality works consistently rather than being the kind of feature that sounds useful but rarely gets used in practice.

It is also a good option for people upgrading from NHS hearing aids who want something less visible and more capable. The NHS mostly offers Behind-the-Ear aids designed for practicality rather than discretion. The Moxi 7 sits behind the ear with a slim receiver wire running to the ear canal, making it considerably less noticeable. Your HCPC-registered audiologist will fit and programme the aids at your free home visit or free clinic appointment.

Who might it not suit?

The Moxi 7 suits mild to severe hearing loss. If you have profound hearing loss, your audiologist may recommend a more powerful BTE style. If busy restaurants and noisy multi-speaker environments are a regular challenge, the Moxi 9 is worth considering instead. If maximum discretion is your priority, a custom in-ear aid such as the Insera 7 may be worth considering alongside this model.

"The Moxi S-R 7 is the aid I'd recommend to someone who wants reliable, automatic performance without paying for features their daily listening doesn't actually require. The Bluetooth works consistently, the rechargeable system is straightforward, and for most people's day-to-day listening needs, six environments is genuinely enough. If someone asks me whether they need the 9, the honest answer is often that they don't."

FAQs

What is the best hearing aid model for me?

In general, any audiologist will always recommend to you the hearing aid model that best suits your needs. Here is a useful checklist to make sure that is the case.

  • Audiologist's level of knowledge: The audiologist you have seen will hopefully have a wide knowledge of all available hearing aids; however, some will only be familiar with a small number of brands and, therefore, may not really be in a position to know which model is the best for you. It is OK to challenge their recommendation and ask them to justify why this particular brand is the one for you.
  • Do research: Read about the hearing aid that was recommended. Does it seem like it will suit your lifestyle? Does it have more or fewer features than you need?
  • Be aware of sales targets: Many high street retailers have specific tie-ins to a particular manufacturer/brand. The hearing aid they have suggested may still be the correct one for you, but do your research so that you know why they might have recommended it.  You can read our best hearing aids of this year here
Do I need one hearing aid or two?

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:

Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.

Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.

Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.

Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.

Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.

Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

What are the benefits of rechargeable hearing aids?

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up.  Here are some other pros and cons:

For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.

One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.

Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.

Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

Are Behind-the-Ear hearing aids better than In-the-Ear hearing aids?

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.

The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.

However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.

People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.

There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.

Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.

What are channels, and how many do I need?

Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.  The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward.  Here are some reasons why:

Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.

Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.

As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.

What's covered in a manufacturer's warranty?

Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.

We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind.  Find out more about our warranty cover here
