The Unitron Smile Moxi 3 hearing aids are Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) models built on Unitron's Smile platform, and it is designed for people whose hearing needs are genuinely simple. If most of your listening happens in quiet, familiar settings and you are not regularly navigating noisy or unpredictable environments, you do not need to pay for technology built around those situations.
The AI-trained Integra OS recognises two listening environments and adjusts automatically as your surroundings change. For anyone whose day is mostly quiet conversations and occasional background noise, two environments cover the situations you actually encounter without unnecessary complexity.
Where the 3 differs from the rest of the range is straightforward: it handles the fundamentals well and nothing more. If your daily listening regularly includes group conversations, music, or noisier environments, the Moxi 5 is worth considering instead. If it does not, the 3 delivers reliable, rechargeable performance at the most accessible price point in the Moxi range.
The Moxi S-R 3 has been available since May 2025 and can be tried, fitted, and fine-tuned by one of our HCPC-registered audiologists at a local clinic or during a free home visit, wherever you are in the UK.
Pinna Effect 2: This feature mimics the natural shape of the outer ear to better understand where sound is coming from. So if someone calls from across the park or the other side of the living room, you’ll more naturally recognise the direction, making everyday situations feel less effortful.
Double Tap Control: Answering a call or pausing your music when you’ve got your hands full? Just tap your hearing aid – no need to fumble for your phone.
Integra OS: The Smile 3 includes Unitron’s intelligent operating system, which can identify common sound settings such as quiet conversation or gentle background noise. Whether you're in a calm café or enjoying a quiet family dinner, your hearing aid will subtly adjust to help keep speech comfortable and intelligible.
Integra OS Automation System: Automatically adapts settings for a handful of common sound environments, including:
AutoFocus 360: Useful during small gatherings or family meals, AutoFocus 360 helps prioritise the voice in front of you while reducing the hum of background noise, so you can enjoy a flowing conversation without strain.
IP68 Rating: British weather or busy kitchen? No problem. The Smile 3 hearing aids are resistant to moisture, dust, and water, so you can get on with your day, rain or shine.
Stay connected with ‘Made For All’ and universal Bluetooth compatibility, the Moxi Smile S-R 3 lets you stream audio directly from your mobile or tablet. Whether you're listening to music, taking a call, or watching telly, the connection is seamless and straightforward.
The Moxi Smile S-R 3 is rechargeable, making it an easy and environmentally friendly option. A full charge takes around 3 hours, offering a full day of reliable listening and streaming. Two charging options are available:
The Moxi S-R 3 is a strong fit for anyone whose hearing needs are genuinely straightforward. If your day is mostly quiet conversations at home, familiar surroundings, and the occasional background noise, two listening environments cover what you actually encounter without paying for processing capability you are unlikely to need.
It is particularly well-suited to people who want Bluetooth connectivity as part of their daily routine without the complexity of a higher technology level. Streaming calls and television audio directly to your hearing aids is straightforward, and the hands-free functionality works consistently rather than being the kind of feature that sounds useful but rarely gets used in practice.
It is also a practical option for people upgrading from NHS hearing aids who want something less visible and more convenient. The NHS mostly offers Behind-the-Ear aids designed for practicality rather than discretion. The Moxi S-R 3 sits behind the ear with a slim receiver wire running to the ear canal, making it considerably less noticeable. Your HCPC-registered audiologist will fit and programme the aids at your free home visit or free clinic appointment.
The Moxi S-R 3 suits mild to severe hearing loss. If you have profound hearing loss, your audiologist may recommend a more powerful BTE style. If your daily listening includes background noise, group conversations, or music with any regularity, the Moxi S-R 5 is worth considering instead. If maximum discretion is your priority, a custom in-ear aid such as the Insera 3 may be worth considering alongside this model.

"The Moxi S-R 3 is for people who want to hear clearly in the situations that matter most to them, without any fuss. Two environments sound minimal on paper, but for someone whose day is mostly quiet conversations and familiar surroundings, it is genuinely enough. The Bluetooth works, the rechargeable system is simple, and there is nothing complicated to learn or manage. If someone's listening life is straightforward, the honest advice is to start here."

When you choose the Smile Moxi 3 through us, you're getting considerably more than just the hearing aids:
We don't have a manufacturer to answer to, and we don't have sales targets to hit. That means the only question our audiologists are trying to answer is what works best for your hearing and your life. They will talk you through everything in plain English, answer whatever is on your mind, and make sure the only thing you leave with is clarity.
The Unitron Smile Moxi S-R 3 does not try to be everything, and that is the point. It is a well-built, rechargeable hearing aid that handles the fundamentals well: clear speech in quiet settings, reliable Bluetooth, and overnight charging without any fuss. For anyone whose daily listening is genuinely straightforward, it is likely to be more than sufficient.
It is the most accessible entry point into the Moxi range, and the core experience, the Bluetooth, the rechargeable convenience, and the build quality, are the same as the models above it. What differs is how the aids handle complexity, and for many people, that complexity simply does not feature in their day.
If you are unsure whether the 3 is the right starting point, or whether the Moxi S-R 5 or a custom in-ear option like the Insera 3 would suit you better, our HCPC-registered audiologists will give you an honest steer at your free appointment.
Not sure if the Moxi 3 is right for you? Speak to one of our HCPC-registered audiologists for honest, no-obligation advice. Book a free home visit or free clinic appointment here, or call us free on 0800 567 7621.
Please note that there will be an additional surcharge of £125 if we are pairing a single hearing aid with an existing aid bought from another company, where we are taking over the aftercare responsibilities and looking after both hearing aids.
Are two listening environments really enough?
For many people, yes. If your day mostly involves quiet conversations, familiar surroundings, and the occasional background noise, two environments cover the situations you actually encounter. Your audiologist will tell you honestly if your lifestyle suggests you would benefit from more, with no pressure to step up if the 3 is sufficient.
What is the difference between the Moxi S-R 3 and the Insera 3?
Same technology level, different style. The Moxi S-R 3 sits behind the ear with a slim wire to the canal. The Insera 3 is custom-moulded and sits entirely inside the ear. If maximum discretion is the priority, the Insera 3 is worth considering alongside this model.
Does it work with both iPhone and Android?
Yes, and without any additional accessories. Calls and audio streaming work directly from your phone, whether that is an iPhone or an Android.
How long does the battery last, and how does charging work?
Up to 20 hours from an overnight charge, including streaming. Place the aids in the charger before bed, and they will be ready in the morning. No disposable batteries to manage.
What support is included after I am fitted?
All Moxi S-R 3 aids include aftercare for life, covering adjustments and follow-up appointments with no time limit and no extra charge, plus a 60-day money-back guarantee.

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.
Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.
For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all. The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.
We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind. Find out more about our warranty cover here
