How Intelligent All-Around works

Three systems work together, and at Sensia 9, all three run without any input from you:

• AcoustIQ (sensing the room): Resound's classifier reads the environment continuously. It doesn't just label the situation; it switches on the features that will actually help. Resound reports 91% classification accuracy in its own testing.
• Four-microphone focus: Both hearing aids combine their microphones into one forward-facing beam, on the basis that you usually look at the person you want to hear. Some awareness of sound around you is kept, rather than cut out entirely.
• AI noise reduction: The DNN is trained to separate speech from competing noise. When the background is mostly non-speech, such as a fan or a vacuum cleaner, Sensia 9 switches to the established Noise Tracker II system instead, which avoids the artefacts a speech-trained AI can produce.

The practical difference shows up in the classic busy-restaurant problem. Some AI hearing aids lock onto the loudest voice in the room, even if it's two tables away. Sensia 9 uses the direction you're facing as a clue to which voice you actually want.

How does Sensia 9 compare with the previous Resound Vivia 9?

Sensia 9 and Vivia 9 share the same chip and AI engine, and the microRIE looks the same. The difference is automation. Vivia 9's AI noise reduction lived in a separate programme you had to select. Sensia 9 switches it on by itself when a conversation gets difficult. Resound states that Sensia's sound sensing has been refined, and the range adds custom in-ear styles, which Vivia didn't offer.

Who might not need Sensia 9?

If most of your listening happens in quieter settings, such as one-to-one conversations at home or watching TV, Sensia 7 or Sensia 5 may give you everything you need.

Sensia 9's biggest advantage, the automatic AI, is also only in the microRIE. So if you'd prefer a battery-powered RIE or a custom in-ear style, the gap between Sensia 9 and the lower levels is much smaller.

If your difficult situations are predictable, Sensia 7 gives you the same AI in a programme you choose. If most of your listening is quieter, Sensia 5 may be all you need. The best way to decide is to talk through your hearing test results and everyday listening with your audiologist.

Comparing the different technology levels

Which Sensia 9 style gets the full experience?

This is the most important point on the page. Intelligent All-Around, Intelligent Focus and AI noise reduction are only in the rechargeable Sensia 9 microRIE.

The Sensia 9 is also available in battery-powered RIE 61 and RIE 62 models and in the custom in-ear range. Those styles get Sensia 9's other premium processing, but not the automatic AI. If the automatic AI is the reason you're interested, the microRIE is the one to ask your audiologist about.

Battery life and charging

The Sensia 9 microRIE gives around 24 hours on a typical day, with up to 30 hours without streaming. With streaming for half the day, expect around 20 hours.

Charging is inductive, so the hearing aids simply drop into place in the charger. The Premium charger holds extra charges for when you're away from a plug.

The app

The Resound Smart 3D app covers volume, programmes, battery status and noise control. It also includes an Auracast Assistant for finding broadcast streams and remote fine-tuning, so your audiologist can make minor adjustments without an appointment.

Accessories
