The Phonak Infinio Ultra i90R is the premium model from Phonak's Infinio Ultra range, and it represents a significant step forward in automatic hearing aid technology. Whilst it doesn't have the dedicated AI chip found in the Infinio Sphere Ultra models, it brings AI-trained sound classification and fully automated adjustments that make it an excellent choice for people who want high-quality hearing without constantly fiddling with settings.
The headline feature of the Infinio Ultra i90R is how thoroughly automatic it is. The hearing aids use AI-trained sound classification to recognise what's happening around you and adjust accordingly - whether you're in a quiet room, busy restaurant, listening to music, or having a conversation in your car.
You don't need to think about what programme you should be using or manually adjust settings throughout the day. The aids handle it for you, and they do it rather well.
This automation is powered by Phonak's new ERA chip, which provides faster processing than previous generations. The result is hearing aids that respond more quickly and accurately to changes in your environment, making transitions between different listening situations feel seamless and natural.
The i90R uses AutoSense 7.0, which is Phonak's seventh generation of automatic environment detection. This system has been trained using artificial intelligence on thousands of real-world sound scenes, so it's genuinely good at recognising the difference between, say, a quiet conversation at home and a noisy restaurant, or between speech and music.
As you move through your day, AutoSense continuously analyses your sound environment and automatically loads the appropriate programme, adjusts volume, and modifies the hearing aid's advanced features.
It happens in the background without you needing to do anything, which is frankly how hearing aids should work. The fact that this is the seventh generation means it's been refined repeatedly based on real user experiences, and it shows.
One area where the i90R particularly excels is music recognition. The AI-trained classification system can distinguish between different types of music - jazz, classical, hip-hop, and electronic - and adjust processing accordingly.
This matters because music needs to be processed differently from speech, and many hearing aids don't handle this distinction well. If you enjoy live music, concerts, or just listening to your favourite albums at home, the i90R's music handling is genuinely impressive.
Whilst the i90R doesn't have the dedicated AI chip of the Sphere models, it still provides excellent speech understanding in noisy environments through advanced signal processing and directional microphone technology.
The i90 technology level gives you access to the full suite of Phonak's speech enhancement features, making conversations in restaurants, pubs, or busy social situations considerably easier to follow than with older hearing aid technology.
The i90R includes Phonak's new APD 3.0 fitting prescription, which uses the enhanced processing speed of the ERA chip to provide more accurate gain at each frequency of your hearing loss.
This is quite technical, but essentially it means the hearing aids can be programmed more precisely to your specific hearing profile. It's one of those background improvements that contribute to everything sounding more natural and comfortable.
The i90R supports universal Bluetooth connectivity, and it actually works reliably. It connects properly to both iPhone and Android devices, as well as laptops and tablets. You can pair two devices simultaneously - so your phone and laptop can both stay connected - and the enhanced Bluetooth transmission power provides double the range of previous Phonak models.
This matters enormously in daily use. Dodgy Bluetooth connections are genuinely frustrating, and there's nothing worse than audio cutting in and out during an important phone call. The i90R's connectivity is stable enough that you'll actually want to use it regularly rather than avoiding it because it doesn't work properly.
The hearing aids support two-way streaming, so you can both hear and speak through them during phone calls. It's reliable enough to become a feature you depend on rather than merely tolerate.
The i90R is ready for Auracast broadcast technology, which is still emerging but promises to let you connect directly to public sound systems like televisions, cinemas, or announcement systems. This could be genuinely useful once it becomes more widespread, though it's not something you'll use immediately.
You can answer phone calls or control audio streaming by double-tapping the hearing aids themselves. It's surprisingly intuitive once you're used to it and means you don't need to fumble for your phone when a call comes in. It's one of those small features that make daily use considerably more convenient.
The i90R is fully rechargeable, providing up to 31 hours of battery life for mild hearing loss without streaming. Even with regular streaming use throughout the day, you'll comfortably get through a full day before needing to charge overnight. The charging case is straightforward to use, and you'll quickly get into the routine of simply placing the hearing aids in the charger each night.
The i90R is compatible with Phonak's patented EasyGuard dome, which protects the hearing aids from wax buildup. This might not sound exciting, but anyone who's had to get their hearing aids professionally cleaned frequently because of wax blockages will appreciate this practical feature. It makes maintenance noticeably easier and helps keep the hearing aids performing optimally.
If you have unaidable hearing loss in one ear, the i90R is compatible with Phonak's CROS and BiCROS systems. This means you can still benefit from bilateral hearing even if one ear cannot be helped with traditional amplification. The CROS transmitter picks up sound from your unaidable side and wirelessly transmits it to the hearing aid on your better ear, giving you awareness of sound from both sides.
The Infinio Ultra comes in four technology levels - i90, i70, i50, and i30 - each offering different features and performance levels. The i90 is the premium tier with all features fully enabled and the maximum number of processing channels for the most precise sound adjustments.
If you regularly find yourself in challenging listening situations - particularly noisy social environments - we strongly recommend the i90 level for superior speech intelligibility.
These hearing aids are rated IP68 for water and dust resistance - the highest rating available for hearing aids. They won't survive swimming (no hearing aid will), but they'll handle rain, splashes, dusty environments, and the general wear and tear of daily life without complaint. This is particularly important for active people who don't want to worry about their hearing aids in less-than-perfect conditions.
The Infinio Ultra i90R is ideal for people who want excellent hearing aid performance with thorough automation and don't necessarily need the dedicated AI chip of the Sphere models. It's particularly good for people who:
If you spend considerable time in extremely challenging, noisy environments like very busy restaurants or crowded pubs, you might want to consider the Infinio Sphere Ultra models with their dedicated AI chip. However, for most people in typical daily listening situations, the i90R provides excellent performance at a more accessible price point than the Sphere range.
Choose the Infinio Ultra R if you want premium hearing aid technology with excellent sound quality and adaptation across varied environments, but don't regularly find yourself in extremely challenging multi-speaker situations.
It offers outstanding value within the premium category and delivers meaningful improvements over previous generations without requiring you to pay for hardware innovations you might not need.
Choose the Infinio Ultra Sphere if speech understanding in noisy, multi-speaker environments is a significant challenge in your daily life, and you want technology that can do things previous hearing aids genuinely couldn't.
The dedicated AI chip and Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0 specifically address this problem with new hardware capability, and if this is where you struggle most, the additional investment represents actual innovation rather than just incremental improvement.

Not only are the prices great, but the service is fantastic! Many thanks to your team.In general, any audiologist will always recommend to you the hearing aid model that best suits your needs. Here is a useful checklist to make sure that is the case.
If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.
Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.
For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all. The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.
We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind.
Our hearing tests are completely free, whether at our clinics or in your home. Unlike other providers who charge £30-£100 for home visits, we believe hearing healthcare should be accessible without financial barriers. Our comprehensive assessments include examination by a registered audiologist, audiogram results, and personalised recommendations.
All testing, future adjustments, and ongoing support are included at no extra cost. While NHS tests are also free, typical 6-week waiting periods often lead people to seek immediate private testing. We provide prompt, professional assessments that fit your schedule and budget.
Yes, we offer completely free home visits throughout the UK, and this service is included in our prices with no additional charges. Home visits are particularly valuable for people with mobility issues, busy schedules, or those who simply prefer the comfort and convenience of their own environment.
Our audiologists can conduct full hearing tests, fit hearing aids, and provide ongoing support in your home. This service sets us apart from many providers who either don't offer home visits or charge extra for them.
We can offer prices up to 40% lower than high street retailers because of our business model. As a network of 200+ independent audiologists, we don't have the massive overheads of large retail chains - no expensive high street premises, no sales targets pushing audiologists to sell the most expensive options, and no costly marketing campaigns.
However, we maintain the same buying power as the big chains because we purchase on behalf of our entire nationwide network. This means you get access to the same premium hearing aids with professional service, but at genuinely competitive prices.
We offer a comprehensive 60-day money-back guarantee, which gives you twice the industry standard time to properly assess whether your hearing aids are right for you. This extended period recognises that adjusting to hearing aids takes time, and your brain needs several weeks to adapt to the amplified sounds.
Unlike many providers who offer just 30 days, we believe 60 days gives you the confidence to test your hearing aids in all the situations that matter to you - from quiet conversations at home to busy restaurants and outdoor activities.
