Phonak Infinio Ultra i70 R hearing aids overview

The Phonak Infinio Ultra R i70 is the advanced-level model from Phonak's Infinio Ultra range, and it represents genuinely excellent value if you know what you're looking at. You're getting the vast majority of the premium i90's features - including the sophisticated SmartSpeech Technology suite - at a more accessible price point.

The i70 includes AI-trained AutoSense OS 7.0, all the key speech enhancement features, universal Bluetooth connectivity, and the same 20 fine-tuning channels as the premium i90.

The main difference? StereoZoom 2.0 operates as a manual program rather than activating automatically, and you'll need to tap the hearing aids yourself rather than having automatic tap control. For many people, these are minor compromises that make premium Phonak technology considerably more affordable.

This isn't a stripped-down version - it's a thoughtfully configured hearing aid that delivers outstanding performance for people who want advanced features without paying for every automatic refinement the i90 offers.

Quick highlights:

  • Suitable for mild to profound hearing loss
  • AI-trained AutoSense OS 7.0 with 8 automatic programs
  • Full SmartSpeech Technology suite (SpeechSensor, Speech Enhancer, Dynamic Noise Cancellation, Motion Sensor Hearing)
  • StereoZoom 2.0 available via manual program
  • Up to 31 hours of battery life (fully rechargeable)
  • Universal Bluetooth connectivity (iPhone & Android)
  • 20 fine-tuning channels (same as i90)
  • IP68 water and dust resistance
  • Roger technology compatible
  • Available in 7 colours: Sand beige, sandalwood, chestnut, champagne, silver grey, graphite grey, velvet black
  • Compatible accessories: Roger On, Roger Select, Roger Table Mic, Roger Clip-On Mic, myPhonak app
  • Book a consultation to try the Infinio Ultra i70 R

What do you actually get with the i70?

The i70 sits in what we'd call the "sweet spot" of the Infinio Ultra R range. You're getting advanced hearing aid technology with the sophisticated processing that makes Phonak hearing aids excellent, but without paying for every automated convenience feature.  Let's take a look at the main ones below:

  • Full SmartSpeech technology features:  This is important. You're getting SpeechSensor (which detects where speech is coming from), Speech Enhancer (which boosts quieter speech), Dynamic Noise Cancellation, and Motion Sensor Hearing. These are the features that actually improve speech understanding in daily life.
  • AI-trained AutoSense OS 7.0:  The hearing aids automatically recognise your environment and switch between eight different programs throughout your day. Whether you're in a quiet room, a busy restaurant, listening to music, or in your car, the aids adjust without you needing to think about it.
  • 20 fine-tuning channels:  This is the same number as the premium i90, which means your hearing care professional can programme the aids just as precisely to your specific hearing loss. More channels mean a more accurate fit.
  • Universal Bluetooth connectivity:  Reliable connection to both iPhone and Android devices, with double the transmission range of previous Phonak models. Two-way streaming for phone calls works consistently enough that you'll actually use it.
  • Premium build quality:  IP68 water and dust resistance, EasyGuard wax protection compatibility, rechargeable with 31-hour battery life. You're not compromising on durability or daily practicality.

How does the i70 adjust to different environments?

The i70 uses Phonak's AI-trained AutoSense OS 7.0, which has been refined over seven generations and genuinely works brilliantly. The system has been trained on thousands of real-world sound environments, so it's remarkably good at recognising what's happening around you and adjusting accordingly.

As you move through your day - quiet home, busy street, restaurant, car journey - the hearing aids detect these changes and automatically load the appropriate program. You're not thinking about what setting you should be using or manually switching programs. The aids handle it in the background, which is exactly how hearing aids should work.

The i70 includes all eight AutoSense OS 7.0 programs:

  • Speech in Loud Noise
  • Music
  • Speech in Car
  • Comfort in Noise
  • Speech in Noise
  • Calm Situation
  • Streaming Speech
  • Streaming Music

These automatic programs cover virtually every listening situation you'll encounter, and the transitions between them are seamless enough that you won't consciously notice the aids switching modes.  Learn more about AutoSense OS 7.0 technology by speaking with one of our experts.

SpeechSensor

SpeechSensor continuously monitors your environment from all directions to determine where speech is coming from. If someone addresses you from the side or behind, the hearing aids detect this and adjust their microphone directionality accordingly. You don't need to turn your head to face every speaker - particularly valuable in dynamic situations like walking with friends or group conversations.

Whether you're walking through town with a friend who's chatting beside you, or someone calls your name from behind in the supermarket, the i70 adjusts automatically so you don't miss what matters.

Speech Enhancer

Speech Enhancer identifies and boosts soft speech in quiet environments - brilliant for those frustrating situations where someone's speaking too quietly, but you don't want to constantly ask them to speak up. The technology provides appropriate amplification for quieter speech whilst keeping louder sounds comfortable.

Dynamic noise cancellation

This feature continuously measures noise levels and applies appropriate noise reduction to keep speech audible above background sounds. Unlike simple noise reduction that makes everything quieter (including the speech you want to hear), Dynamic Noise Cancellation specifically targets steady-state background noise whilst preserving speech clarity.

This means when you're in a café with constant coffee machine noise or in a car with engine hum, the i70 reduces these distracting sounds whilst keeping your companion's voice clear and natural.

Motion sensor hearing

The i70 includes motion sensors that detect when you're moving versus stationary. When you're walking, the hearing aids adjust their processing to maintain speech understanding whilst managing the additional environmental sounds that come with movement. It's a subtle feature that contributes significantly to how natural everything sounds.

These aren't minor refinements - they're meaningful technologies that improve speech understanding in real-world situations. The fact that you're getting all of them at the i70 level makes this an excellent value.  Explore SmartSpeech technology in depth with one of our audiologists.

Music sounds like music

The i70 handles music brilliantly, with AI-trained recognition that distinguishes between different music types and adjusts processing accordingly. The automatic Music programme provides a wider frequency response and reduced compression, allowing music to sound rich and natural. The fact that this happens automatically through AutoSense makes it considerably more practical in daily use.

Speech understanding in varied environments

The i70 provides excellent speech understanding in typical daily environments - restaurants, social gatherings, and workplace conversations. The combination of SpeechSensor, Speech Enhancer, and Dynamic Noise Cancellation maintains speech clarity across varied listening situations.

In particularly challenging situations - very noisy restaurants or crowded pubs - you can manually activate the "Speech in Loud Noise" programme, which engages StereoZoom 2.0. This creates a narrow, focused beam directly in front of you, significantly improving your ability to follow one conversation in extreme noise.

On the i90, this happens automatically. On the i70, you switch to it manually using the programme button or myPhonak app. Once activated, it works identically - you're just controlling when it engages. For many users, manual activation is perfectly acceptable, and the money you save is considerable.

APD 3.0 precision fitting

The i70 includes Phonak's APD 3.0 fitting prescription, which provides more accurate gain at each frequency of your hearing loss. Combined with 20 fine-tuning channels (the same as the i90), this allows your hearing care professional to create a highly customised fitting that matches your hearing loss accurately.

Universal Bluetooth connectivity that works

The i70 supports universal Bluetooth connectivity that actually works reliably. The aids connect properly to both iPhone and Android devices, as well as laptops and tablets. You can pair two devices simultaneously, with double the transmission range of previous Phonak models. Two-way streaming for phone calls is stable enough that you'll want to use it regularly.

The i70 is also ready for Auracast broadcast technology, which promises to let you connect to public sound systems once it becomes more widespread.

Practical design and daily use

  • Rechargeable with 31-hour battery life:  The i70 provides up to 31 hours of battery life for mild hearing loss without streaming. Even with regular streaming, you'll comfortably get through from morning to bedtime before charging overnight.

In practical terms, if you put them on at 7 am and stream a few phone calls and some music during the day, you'll still have a comfortable charge remaining at bedtime. Charge them overnight and you're ready for another full day.

  • EasyGuard wax protection:  The i70 is compatible with Phonak's EasyGuard dome, which protects the hearing aids from wax buildup - making maintenance noticeably easier.
  • IP68 Water and dust resistance:  IP68-rated for the highest water and dust resistance available. They'll handle rain, splashes, and dusty environments without complaint - the same durability as the premium i90.
  • CROS and BiCROS compatible:  If you have unaidable hearing loss in one ear, the i70 works with Phonak's CROS and BiCROS systems. The CROS transmitter picks up sound from your unaidable side and wirelessly transmits it to the hearing aid on your better ear.

Why choose Ultra i70 R?

The i70 gives you what actually matters: the complete SmartSpeech Technology suite (SpeechSensor, Speech Enhancer, Dynamic Noise Cancellation, Motion Sensor Hearing), AI-trained AutoSense, and the same 20 fine-tuning channels as the i90. You're getting advanced speech processing, thorough automation, and premium build quality - essentially everything that improves speech understanding in daily life.

The trade-off? StereoZoom 2.0 requires manual activation instead of automatic, and you use your phone rather than tap control. For most people in typical daily environments, the i70 delivers the technology that matters at a price that makes sense - it's the smart value choice in the Ultra R range.

Researching for a loved one?

If you're reading this page on behalf of someone else - perhaps a parent, partner, or friend - you're not alone. Many people come to us researching hearing aids for family members who've been struggling with hearing loss, and it's one of the most thoughtful things you can do.

The best next step is booking a consultation. You're welcome to attend with them - many family members find it helpful to be there for the discussion.

Our audiologists can assess whether this technology is appropriate for their specific hearing loss and lifestyle, and answer any questions you both have. There's no obligation, and it's an opportunity to understand what modern hearing aid technology can actually achieve.

Ultra R or Sphere: Which do you need?

Choose the Infinio Ultra R if you want premium hearing aid technology with excellent sound quality and adaptation across varied environments, but don't regularly find yourself in extremely challenging multi-speaker situations.

It offers outstanding value within the premium category and delivers meaningful improvements over previous generations without requiring you to pay for hardware innovations you might not need.

Choose the Infinio Ultra Sphere if speech understanding in noisy, multi-speaker environments is a significant challenge in your daily life, and you want technology that can do things previous hearing aids genuinely couldn't.

The dedicated AI chip and Spheric Speech Clarity 2.0 specifically address this problem with new hardware capability, and if this is where you struggle most, the additional investment represents actual innovation rather than just incremental improvement.

Key takeaways

  • Advanced technology at better value - The i70 includes the full SmartSpeech Technology suite (SpeechSensor, Speech Enhancer, Dynamic Noise Cancellation, Motion Sensor Hearing) that actually improves speech understanding, at significantly lower cost than the i90
  • Same 20 channels as premium i90 - Your hearing care professional can programme the i70 just as precisely to your hearing loss, ensuring accurate fitting across all frequencies
  • All 8 AutoSense OS 7.0 programs - Automatic environment detection and adjustment throughout your day, covering every listening situation from quiet conversations to music to streaming
  • Minor compromises - StereoZoom 2.0 works identically but requires manual activation rather than automatic, and you use your phone rather than tap control. For most people, these are easy trade-offs
  • Excellent music handling - AI-trained music recognition that automatically distinguishes between music types and processes them appropriately, not just as background noise
  • Universal Bluetooth that works - Reliable connectivity to iPhone and Android with double the transmission range, stable enough for regular phone calls and streaming
  • Premium build quality - IP68 water and dust resistance, EasyGuard compatibility, rechargeable with 31-hour battery life. No compromise on durability
  • CROS/BiCROS compatible - Works with Phonak's systems for single-sided deafness or unaidable hearing loss in one ear
  • Best suited for - Active adults who want advanced hearing aid technology with meaningful speech enhancement features, without paying for every automation convenience the i90 offers

FAQs

What is the best hearing aid model for me?

In general, any audiologist will always recommend to you the hearing aid model that best suits your needs. Here is a useful checklist to make sure that is the case.

  • Audiologist's level of knowledge: The audiologist you have seen will hopefully have a wide knowledge of all available hearing aids; however, some will only be familiar with a small number of brands and, therefore, may not really be in a position to know which model is the best for you. It is OK to challenge their recommendation and ask them to justify why this particular brand is the one for you.
  • Do research: Read about the hearing aid that was recommended. Does it seem like it will suit your lifestyle? Does it have more or fewer features than you need?
  • Be aware of sales targets: Many high street retailers have specific tie-ins to a particular manufacturer/brand. The hearing aid they have suggested may still be the correct one for you, but do your research so that you know why they might have recommended it.
Do I need one hearing aid or two?

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:

Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.

Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.

Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.

Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.

Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.

Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

Fancy some further reading on this topic?  You can read about why two hearing aids are better than one in our article, hearing aids for Both Ears, here

What are the benefits of rechargeable hearing aids?

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up.  Here are some other pros and cons:

For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.

One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.

Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.

Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

Are Behind-the-Ear hearing aids better than In-the-Ear hearing aids?

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.

The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.

However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.

People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.

There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.

Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.

What are channels, and how many do I need?

Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.  The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward.  Here are some reasons why:

Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.

Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.

As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.

What's covered in a manufacturer's warranty?

Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.

We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind.

How much does the hearing test cost?

Our hearing tests are completely free, whether at our clinics or in your home. Unlike other providers who charge £30-£100 for home visits, we believe hearing healthcare should be accessible without financial barriers. Our comprehensive assessments include examination by a registered audiologist, audiogram results, and personalised recommendations.

All testing, future adjustments, and ongoing support are included at no extra cost. While NHS tests are also free, typical 6-week waiting periods often lead people to seek immediate private testing. We provide prompt, professional assessments that fit your schedule and budget.

Do you offer home visits, and are they included in the price?

Yes, we offer completely free home visits throughout the UK, and this service is included in our prices with no additional charges. Home visits are particularly valuable for people with mobility issues, busy schedules, or those who simply prefer the comfort and convenience of their own environment.

Our audiologists can conduct full hearing tests, fit hearing aids, and provide ongoing support in your home.  This service sets us apart from many providers who either don't offer home visits or charge extra for them.

Why are your hearing aids cheaper than what I'd pay on the high street?

We can offer prices up to 40% lower than high street retailers because of our business model. As a network of 200+ independent audiologists, we don't have the massive overheads of large retail chains - no expensive high street premises, no sales targets pushing audiologists to sell the most expensive options, and no costly marketing campaigns.

However, we maintain the same buying power as the big chains because we purchase on behalf of our entire nationwide network. This means you get access to the same premium hearing aids with professional service, but at genuinely competitive prices.

How long do I have to try the hearing aids before committing to keep them?

We offer a comprehensive 60-day money-back guarantee, which gives you twice the industry standard time to properly assess whether your hearing aids are right for you. This extended period recognises that adjusting to hearing aids takes time, and your brain needs several weeks to adapt to the amplified sounds.

Unlike many providers who offer just 30 days, we believe 60 days gives you the confidence to test your hearing aids in all the situations that matter to you - from quiet conversations at home to busy restaurants and outdoor activities.
