Unitron Moxi S-RX 9 Hearing Aids Overview

If you frequently find yourself in challenging listening situations, from busy restaurants and conference rooms to large family gatherings and noisy workplaces, and you want your hearing aids to handle them without you having to think about it, the Unitron Moxi S-RX 9 hearing aids are the model to consider.

It sits at the top of the Unitron Smile range, and the meaningful difference over the lower levels isn't just processing power in the abstract. It's the combination of AutoFocus 360 and fully automatic HyperFocus: features that work together in real time, without requiring you to press a button or open an app, to give you the clearest possible speech in the most demanding listening environments.

Quick product highlights:

  • Premium (Level 9) technology on the Unitron Smile platform
  • Integra OS with all eight listening environments, including Conversation in Loud Noise and Conversation in a Crowd, activated automatically
  • AutoFocus 360: speech enhancement from all directions, not just in front
  • HyperFocus: fully automatic in loud noise, no manual control required
  • Dynamic Noise Reduction, active automatically in complex listening environments
  • ERA chip with 552 million operations per second and enhanced Bluetooth processing
  • Universal Bluetooth connectivity, up to eight paired devices, two connected simultaneously
  • Up to 24 hours of battery life from a full charge
  • IP68 water and dust resistant
  • Rocker switch and double-tap control
  • Compatible with Remote Plus app, TV Connector, PartnerMic, and Phonak Roger microphones
  • Available in Amber, Espresso, Platinum, Pewter, Charcoal, and Sand

What makes the 9 different from the 7 and the 5?

This is the question worth answering honestly, because the technology level choice is where most people get lost.

All Moxi S-RX hearing aids, regardless of level, use the same ERA chip, the same physical housing, the same Bluetooth system, and the same charger. They're all rechargeable RIC (Receiver-in-Canal) aids, meaning the main unit sits behind the ear with a thin wire to a small speaker in the ear canal.

They all include Noise Reduction, Speech Enhancement, and AutoFocus. The difference is in how the aids handle the hard stuff.

The Level 9 is the only tier with AutoFocus 360, which means it can identify and enhance speech coming from any direction around you, not just from in front. In a noisy group situation where someone behind you asks a question, or where two conversations are happening simultaneously from different directions, the S-RX 9 has the hardware and software to handle that. The S-RX 7 and S-RX 5 do not.

The other significant difference is HyperFocus. This is a feature that narrows the microphones' focus to a tight beam in front of you in very loud noise, dramatically improving what you can hear. On the S-RX 9, it activates automatically when the aids detect you're in a very loud environment with speech. On the S-RX 7, you have to activate it manually. On the S-RX 5, it isn't available at all.

For people who are out in the world regularly, move between environments frequently, and don't want to manage their hearing aids manually, the S-RX 9's fully automatic behaviour is the key advantage.

Integra OS: all eight environments, fully automatic

The Integra OS in the S-RX 9 recognises and adapts to eight distinct listening environments automatically:

  • Conversation in Quiet
  • Conversation in Noise
  • Conversation in a Small Group
  • Conversation in a Crowd
  • Conversation in Loud Noise
  • Music
  • Noise
  • Quiet

The last two environments on the list, Conversation in a Crowd and Conversation in Loud Noise, are exclusive to Level 9. The S-RX 7 includes Conversation in a Small Group but not in a Crowd or in Loud Noise. The S-RX 5 starts from Conversation in Noise and doesn't go further.

In practice, this means the S-RX 9 adapts intelligently to the most demanding situations you can put it in. You don't manage it. It manages itself.

SoundSonic360

Only available in the top two technology levels, the SoundSonic360 is the AI processing system at the heart of the Moxi S-RX 9. Powered by a deep neural network (DNN) chip, it identifies speech within background noise and keeps it clear in real time, so conversations stay followable even when the environment around you isn't cooperating.

AutoFocus 360 and HyperFocus: the technical detail

AutoFocus 360 uses all four microphones across both hearing aids to work out where speech is coming from and enhance it dynamically from that direction. Dynamic Noise Reduction works alongside it to reduce competing background sounds in real time.

HyperFocus takes a different approach. In very loud noise, the best strategy is sometimes to narrow your focus significantly rather than trying to hear from all directions. HyperFocus directs all four microphones into a tight beam in front of you, giving you maximum clarity for the person you're speaking to when the environment is at its most challenging.

On the S-RX 9, both of these engage automatically. The aids detect the environment, classify it, and apply the right processing without any input from you.

Connectivity and the Remote Plus app

The Moxi S-RX 9 connects via Bluetooth to both iPhone and Android smartphones, as well as tablets and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. You can pair up to eight devices and have two connected simultaneously. The ERA chip provides double the Bluetooth transmission range of previous Unitron models, and hands-free calling works reliably through the aids themselves.

The Remote Plus app gives you additional control when you want it. You can adjust volume and comfort settings, change programmes, see a summary of your listening environment history and daily wear time, and use the Ratings feature to flag moments when the aids are performing well or struggling. That feedback goes directly to your audiologist, who can use it to fine-tune your settings at your next appointment.

The Log It All feature in the background records which environments you've been spending time in, which helps your audiologist understand how your aids are performing in your real life, rather than guessing from a clinic appointment.

For people who'd rather not manage their aids at all, that's fine too. The S-RX 9 is designed to work automatically. The app is there if you want it.

There are two new DNN-powered Optional App Programmes, SpeechSonic and NoiseSonic, let you adjust how the aids handle speech and background noise in the moment.

Battery life and charging

A full charge from the included Charger RIC S takes around three hours and delivers up to 24 hours of use. The precise figure depends on the degree of your hearing loss and how much streaming you do, but in normal use, most wearers will comfortably get through a full waking day on a single charge.

If you travel or are often away from home, the optional ChargerGo has its own built-in battery and charges the aids on the go without needing a mains connection. It's not included in the standard price but is worth considering if your lifestyle demands it.

Easy maintenance

EasyGuard domes are compatible with the Moxi S-RX 9. These dome tips have a sealed membrane that prevents earwax from reaching the receiver, which reduces the need for cleaning and extends the life of the component. It's a practical feature that makes a real difference to daily maintenance.

The aids are also IP68 rated, meaning they're resistant to dust and can withstand immersion in water up to a certain depth. They won't survive swimming, but rain, sweat, and the occasional accidental splash aren't a concern.

Who is the Unitron Moxi S-RX 9 suited to?

The S-RX 9 is the right choice if:

  • You spend significant time in complex listening environments with multiple speakers and background noise
  • You work in a noisy environment, attend regular meetings, or have an active social life
  • You want your hearing aids to manage themselves automatically without requiring manual adjustments
  • You've been frustrated by previous hearing aids performing poorly in exactly the situations where you most need them
  • You're an NHS upgrader who knows their current aids work adequately at home but let them down in busy real-world environments
  • If your hearing needs are primarily in quieter, everyday settings, you may not use the full capability of the S-RX 9 regularly. In that case, the S-RX 7 or S-RX 5 may represent a better value. Your audiologist will be honest with you about this.

A word on independence: Unitron is part of the Sonova group, the same parent company as Phonak. Our HCPC-registered audiologists are not affiliated with any manufacturer, so if a different brand or model would serve you better, that's what they'll tell you.

Who might it not suit?

If you're mostly at home, watching TV, chatting with one or two people, or in smaller social situations without significant background noise, the S-RX 9 is more hearing aid than you need.

That's not a criticism of the technology; it's an honest acknowledgement that the features which justify its price, automatic HyperFocus, AutoFocus 360, the full eight Integra OS environments, only earn their keep in complex, unpredictable noise. For quieter lives, the S-RX 5 or S-RX 7 is the more sensible choice, and one of our qualified audiologists will tell you so without any hesitation.

"The S-RX 9 is the tier I'd recommend to someone who spends a lot of time in genuinely noisy, unpredictable environments and doesn't want to think about managing their hearing aids manually. The automatic HyperFocus and AutoFocus 360 combination is where this model earns its price. But if your life is mostly quieter, I'd tell you honestly that you'd be paying for capability you'll rarely use."

Key takeaways: Unitron Moxi S-RX 9

  • The S-RX 9 is the only tier in the Unitron Smile range with AutoFocus 360, which enhances speech from all directions rather than only from in front

  • A 60-day money-back guarantee applies to all purchases

Conclusion

The Moxi S-RX 9 does what the lower tiers don't: it handles the genuinely difficult listening situations automatically, without asking you to intervene. If that matters in your life regularly, it's a worthwhile investment.

If most of your listening is in quieter, everyday settings, an honest audiologist will tell you so and point you towards a more suitable tier. The only way to know which level is right for you is with a proper hearing assessment. That's free, with no obligation.

Please note that there will be an additional surcharge of £125 if we are pairing a single hearing aid with an existing aid bought from another company, where we are taking over the aftercare responsibilities and looking after both hearing aids.

FAQs

What is the best hearing aid model for me?

In general, any audiologist will always recommend to you the hearing aid model that best suits your needs. Here is a useful checklist to make sure that is the case.

  • Audiologist's level of knowledge: The audiologist you have seen will hopefully have a wide knowledge of all available hearing aids; however, some will only be familiar with a small number of brands and, therefore, may not really be in a position to know which model is the best for you. It is OK to challenge their recommendation and ask them to justify why this particular brand is the one for you.
  • Do research: Read about the hearing aid that was recommended. Does it seem like it will suit your lifestyle? Does it have more or fewer features than you need?
  • Be aware of sales targets: Many high street retailers have specific tie-ins to a particular manufacturer/brand. The hearing aid they have suggested may still be the correct one for you, but do your research so that you know why they might have recommended it.  You can read our best hearing aids of this year here
Do I need one hearing aid or two?

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:

Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.

Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.

Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.

Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.

Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.

Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

Fancy some further reading on this topic?  You can read about why two hearing aids are better than one in our article, hearing aids for Both Ears, here

What are the benefits of rechargeable hearing aids?

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up.  Here are some other pros and cons:

For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.

One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.

Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.

Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

Are Behind-the-Ear hearing aids better than In-the-Ear hearing aids?

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.

The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.

However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.

People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.

There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.

Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.

What are channels, and how many do I need?

Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.  The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward.  Here are some reasons why:

Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.

Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.

As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.

What's covered in a manufacturer's warranty?

Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.

We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind.  Find out more about our warranty cover here
