If your hearing difficulty mostly shows up in quiet, one-to-one conversation, the television, a phone call, a chat across the kitchen table, and you want a straightforward, dependable hearing aid without paying for features you wouldn't use, the Unitron Moxi S-RX 3 is worth considering.
It's the entry point into the Unitron Smile range: reliable everyday hearing improvement, built on the same hardware platform as the rest of the line, but with a simpler feature set tuned to quieter, predictable listening.
Every Moxi S-RX aid uses the same ERA chip, the same housing, and the same charger, regardless of level. They're all rechargeable RIC (Receiver-in-Canal) aids, with the main body sitting behind the ear and a thin wire to a small speaker in the ear canal. What changes between tiers is how much automatic processing is built in.
The S-RX 3 includes Pinna Effect, Speech Enhancement, and Noise Reduction, the core processing that helps speech stand out and reduces general background noise.
It doesn't include Soft Speech or Pinna Effect 2, and it recognises two listening environments automatically (Conversation in Quiet and Conversation in Noise) rather than the four found on the S-RX 5. It has 12 fine-tuning channels, compared with 16 on the 5.
In practice, this means the S-RX 3 does a solid, reliable job in the settings where most people spend most of their time, quiet rooms, one-to-one conversation, light background noise, without the extra layers of automatic adjustment that the 5 and 7 add for busier, more variable days.
The Moxi S-RX 3 connects via Bluetooth to both iPhone and Android smartphones, plus tablets and other Bluetooth-enabled devices, with up to eight devices paired and two connected at once.
The Remote Plus app lets you adjust volume and comfort settings and change programmes when you want to. As with the rest of the range, you don't need to use the app at all if you'd rather the aids simply work in the background.
A full charge takes around three hours and gives up to 24 hours of use. The optional ChargerGo is available for travel, charging the hearing aids on the go without a mains connection.
EasyGuard domes are compatible with the S-RX 3, keeping earwax away from the receiver and reducing cleaning visits. The aids are IP68 rated, so rain, sweat, and the occasional splash won't cause problems, though they're not designed for swimming.
The S-RX 3 is the right choice if:
If your day includes regular trips to noisier places, busy family gatherings, restaurants, or work meetings with several people talking, the S-RX 5 will serve you noticeably better, because it recognises a wider range of listening environments and adds Soft Speech and Pinna Effect 2 processing.
If background noise is a frequent, significant part of your life, you'll likely notice the S-RX 3 working hard but not adapting as smoothly as the higher levels. That's not a flaw; it's simply built for steadier listening. In that case, the S-RX 5 is the more sensible recommendation, and your audiologist will tell you so honestly.
If your hearing difficulty is mostly in quiet, one-to-one settings, the S-RX 3 gives you reliable, straightforward improvement at the most accessible price point in the range.
If you regularly find yourself in moderately busy environments, too, the S-RX 5 is a better match, giving you Soft Speech processing and a wider range of automatic adjustment for a modest step up. Your audiologist will confirm which is right for you at your free hearing assessment, based on your actual hearing test results and the situations you find most difficult.

"The S-RX 3 is a genuinely capable hearing aid for people whose difficulty is mainly in quiet conversation. We'd rather recommend the right level for someone's actual life than the most expensive, and for plenty of people, that's the 3."

When you choose the Moxi S-RX 3 through us, you're getting considerably more than just the hearing aids:
We're not tied to Unitron, or any other manufacturer, and we don't work to sales targets. If the S-RX 3 isn't the right fit for your hearing, our HCPC-registered audiologists will say so and recommend something else, even if that means a different brand entirely.
The Moxi S-RX 5 is built for the listening situations most people actually spend most of their time in: home, quiet conversation, moderate background noise, with reliable Bluetooth for calls and streaming. If your life regularly takes you into loud, unpredictable crowds, the 7 or 9 will do more for you. A free hearing assessment is the only way to know which tier genuinely fits, and there's no obligation either way.
Not sure if the S-RX 3 is enough for your needs? Not sure what to expect? When you get in touch, you'll speak with someone who can answer your questions and arrange a free hearing test if you decide you'd like one. The test is free, the advice is impartial, and there is no obligation to buy anything.
One of our qualified audiologists will carry out a full hearing assessment and recommend the tier that genuinely suits you. Book a free home visit or a free clinic appointment here, or call us on 0800 567 7621. We're a Which? recommended provider, trusted by over 31,000 people across the UK.
Please note that there will be an additional surcharge of £125 if we are pairing a single hearing aid with an existing aid bought from another company, where we are taking over the aftercare responsibilities and looking after both hearing aids.
What is the difference between the Moxi S-RX 3 and the S-RX 5?
The S-RX 5 adds Soft Speech processing and Pinna Effect 2, recognises four listening environments automatically rather than two, and has four extra fine-tuning channels. The S-RX 3 covers the essentials reliably but suits steadier, quieter listening best.
Is the Moxi S-RX 3 suitable for my level of hearing loss?
Suitability depends on your individual hearing test results, and your audiologist will confirm whether the S-RX 3 is the right fit at your free hearing assessment.
Does the S-RX 3 work with Android phones?
Yes. Universal Bluetooth connectivity means it works with both iPhone and Android smartphones, as well as tablets and other Bluetooth devices.
What's included in the price?
All prices through Hearing Aid UK include the hearing test, the fitting appointment with a qualified audiologist, and aftercare for life. The standard charger is included, and the ChargerGo is an optional extra.
Can I try the aids before committing?
Yes. All hearing aids purchased through Hearing Aid UK come with a 60-day money-back guarantee, so if they're not right for you, you'll receive a full refund.

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.
Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.
For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all. The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.
We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind. Find out more about our warranty cover here
