Fitting Styles: ITE, CIC

Not everyone needs the most advanced hearing aid on the market. For many people, what matters most is a comfortable, discreet fit, reliable everyday performance, and the freedom from disposable batteries. The Unitron Smile Insera™ 5 hearing aids deliver exactly that, without the premium price tag of the higher technology levels.
Launched in January 2026 on Unitron's Smile platform, the Insera 5 offers two models. The Insera S-R 5 is a custom rechargeable In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aid shaped precisely to your ear canal. The Insera S 10 NW O is the smaller, Completely-in-Canal (CIC) option, non-wireless but exceptionally discreet. Both are custom-moulded and fitted by a qualified, HCPC-registered audiologist.
The Unitron Smile Insera S-R 5 In-the-Ear hearing aid is rather impressive, not just because it's rechargeable, but because it actually looks more like a modern earbud than a traditional hearing aid. If you've been putting off getting hearing aids because you're worried about how they'll look, this might change your mind.
It's built on Unitron's Smile platform, with a focused feature set designed for straightforward everyday listening and a model moulded specifically to fit your ear canal. The result is something genuinely discreet that doesn't compromise on performance.
The rechargeable aspect is refreshingly straightforward; you just drop them in the charger at night, and they switch off automatically. Pick them up in the morning, and they turn on by themselves, with no fiddling with tiny batteries, no running out of power halfway through the day.
Unitron's EarMatch™ Advantage ensures a spot-on fit from day one, and the technology supports hearing loss from moderate to severe. It works with Unitron's wireless accessories and the Remote Plus™ app for when you do want to make adjustments yourself.
Remote Control: This is great for making discreet adjustments when you need them. Perfect for meetings or quiet evenings when you don't want to be obviously fiddling with your hearing aids but need to fine-tune the volume.
PartnerMic: Clip this onto your conversation partner in noisy environments for clearer, more focused speech. Particularly useful at busy social events when you're trying to have a one-to-one conversation amid the general chaos.
TV Connector: Stream sound directly from your television for clearer, more immersive audio. Everyone else can have the TV at their preferred volume, whilst you hear it perfectly at yours.
The Remote Plus App: Adjust volume, balance, and tone, including bass, mids, and treble, in real time from your phone. Useful for when you want to personalise your listening experience on the go.
Custom rechargeable in-ear hearing aids are still genuinely rare. Most rechargeable technology has, until very recently, been confined to Behind-the-Ear styles, which means anyone wanting a discreet in-ear fit has had to accept the inconvenience of disposable batteries.
The Insera S-R 5 sits in that same small category, bringing overnight charging into a custom in-ear shell at a more accessible price point than the higher technology levels. If you've been holding off on in-ear aids because of the battery question, and don't need the full feature set of the 7 or 9, this is a practical and well-considered option.
This is Unitron's smallest model, a Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) omni hearing aid with telecoil and a size 10 traditional battery, available in four colours: Beige, tan, cocoa, and brown. Although it includes the same technology and reliable performance as the ITE style, it is non-wireless, so there is no Bluetooth connectivity. If you value discretion over pairing with your devices and tapping into accessories, then the 10 NW O is worth considering.
Pinna Effect 2: This mirrors how your outer ear naturally works to help you locate where sounds are coming from. If someone calls your name from behind whilst you're walking, you'll instinctively know which direction to turn. It's one of those features that sounds minor until you realise how much you've been missing it.
AI-Trained Integra OS™: The hearing aids recognise four different listening environments and adjust automatically. Moving from a quiet room to a busy cafe doesn't require you to stop and change programmes, as the technology handles it seamlessly whilst you carry on with your conversation.
Integra OS Automation System: This manages everything from quiet conversations to loud environments, music to general background noise, all without you needing to intervene.
Here are the 4 listening environments in which your hearing will be supported: Noise, quiet, Conversation in Quiet, and Conversation in Noise.
The Insera S-R 5 is a strong fit for anyone whose daily listening is fairly straightforward. If most of your time is spent in quieter environments, one-to-one conversations, or moderate background noise, the 5 covers what you need without paying for features you are unlikely to use.
It is also a sensible starting point for first-time hearing aid wearers who want a reliable, well-built aid before deciding whether a higher technology level would make a meaningful difference. Your audiologist will give you an honest view on this at your appointment.
It is well-suited to people upgrading from NHS hearing aids, too. The NHS mostly offers Behind-the-Ear aids, effective but designed for practicality rather than discretion. The Insera S-R 5 is custom-moulded to your ear and considerably less noticeable. Your audiologist will walk you through the fitting at your free home visit or free clinic appointment.
The Insera 5 suits mild to severe hearing loss. If you have profound hearing loss, your audiologist may suggest a Receiver-in-Canal (RIC) or Behind-the-Ear (BTE) style with greater output capacity. If you regularly find yourself in noisy or varied listening environments, the Insera 7 or Insera 9 would likely serve you better.
The Smile Insera 9 is the premium model with maximum features, the fastest processor, and superior noise reduction, including AutoFocus 360 and HyperFocus, making it ideal for complex listening environments. The 5 offers essential features with reliable performance at an entry-level price, providing good everyday function but lacking the advanced noise-filtering sophistication of the 9.
Both share core Smile technology and Bluetooth connectivity; however, the 9 is better suited for people in consistently challenging environments, whilst the 5 works well for those with quieter lifestyles who need dependable hearing support without the premium processing power.

"The Insera 5 is often the right starting point for people who are new to private hearing aids or whose listening needs are genuinely straightforward. The EarMatch fitting process is identical across the range, so the quality of the fit is the same regardless of technology level. What changes is how the aids handle complexity. If your day doesn't regularly involve noisy restaurants or busy group settings, you may simply not need more than this."

When you choose the Smile Insera 5 through us, you're getting considerably more than just the hearing aids:
Independence isn't something we mention for marketing reasons. It means that when an audiologist suggests the Insera 5, it is because it genuinely suits your hearing and your lifestyle. If something else would serve you better, that is what they will recommend instead, and there is no commercial pressure pulling them in any other direction.
Our audiologists know the technology inside out, but what they are really good at is making sure you leave your appointment feeling clear about what you're getting and why. No jargon left unexplained, no questions left unanswered, and no rushing.
The Unitron Smile Insera 5 offers the same custom fit, rechargeable convenience, and discreet in-ear design as the higher technology levels in the range, at a price point that reflects what most people with everyday listening needs actually require. It is not a compromise. It is a considered choice.
If you are unsure whether the Insera 5, the Insera 7, or the Insera 9 is the better fit, that is exactly the conversation to have at your free appointment. Our HCPC-registered audiologists will give you an honest steer based on your hearing and nothing else.
If the Insera 5 sounds like it could work for you, the next step is a free hearing assessment with one of our HCPC-registered audiologists. Not sure what to expect? When you get in touch, you'll speak with someone who can answer your questions and arrange a free hearing test if you decide you'd like one. The test is free, the advice is impartial, and there is no obligation to buy anything.
If the 5 is right for you, they will say so. If the 7 or 9 would serve you better, they will say that instead. Book a free home visit or free clinic appointment here, or call us free on 0800 567 7621.
Please note that there will be an additional surcharge of £125 if we are pairing a single hearing aid with an existing aid bought from another company, where we are taking over the aftercare responsibilities and looking after both hearing aids.
How does the Insera 5 differ from the 7 and 9, and how do I know which level I need?
The main difference is how many listening environments each model recognises and how it handles complex or noisy situations. The 5 covers 4 environments and suits straightforward daily listening. The 7 adds two more environments and better group conversation handling.
The 9 adds two further environments and automatic HyperFocus for the most demanding conditions. Your audiologist will help you work out which level genuinely matches your lifestyle rather than overselling what you don't need.
Is the fit quality the same as the higher technology levels?
Yes. The EarMatch Advantage fitting process is identical across the entire Insera range. The ear impression, the custom moulding, and the precision of the fit are the same whether you choose the 5, 7, or 9. What differs is the sound processing capability, not the quality of the aid itself.
What does the fitting process involve?
An ear impression is taken first to create your custom mould, which takes only a few minutes and is entirely comfortable. Your HCPC-registered audiologist then programmes the aids to your specific hearing profile, either at a local clinic or during a free home visit.
The S 10 NW O has no Bluetooth. What does it still include?
The same Integra OS sound processing as the S-R 5, automatic adaptation across 4 listening environments, and a telecoil for hearing loops in theatres and public venues. For anyone who wants a near-invisible aid without any technology to manage, the lack of wireless connectivity is a straightforward advantage.
What happens if I try them and they're not right for me?
All Insera 5 aids include a 60-day money-back guarantee and aftercare for life, covering adjustments and follow-up appointments with no time limit and no extra charge.

If you have significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:
Localisation: The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the minuscule time delays as well as the difference in the loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source.
Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.
Less amplification is required: A phenomenon known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than if you wore only one hearing aid.
Head shadow effect: High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore, if someone is talking on your unaided side, you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.
Noise reduction: The brain has its own built-in noise reduction, which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering them out.
Sound quality: We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up. Here are some other pros and cons:
For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference, as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.
One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most, a 30-minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly, then you're probably better off with standard batteries.
Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in Behind-the-Ear models.
Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer's warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.
For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.
The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore, open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore, in-ear aids tend to be less natural.
However, the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.
People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.
There is also the age-old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.
Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.
Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all. The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex, and it is really not that straightforward. Here are some reasons why:
Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low, and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear is split into frequency bands or channels, and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.
Less than six channels, and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six-channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at; it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.
As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example, some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
Manufacturer's warranties typically last between 2-5 years, depending on the brand and model, and cover defects in materials and workmanship. This includes repairs for component failures, electronic malfunctions, and manufacturing defects, but excludes damage from misuse, accidents, or normal wear. Most manufacturers also include loss and damage insurance for the first year.
We handle all warranty claims on your behalf, liaising with manufacturers and ensuring you get replacement devices quickly when needed. This comprehensive warranty coverage, combined with our lifetime aftercare, gives you complete peace of mind. Find out more about our warranty cover here
