Details & Features

Oticon Zircon 2 Hearing Aids

Zircon 2 hearing aids including: miniRITE R / miniRITE T / miniBTE R / miniBTE T

Launched in March 2022 and built on the Polaris platform, Oticon expanded its hearing aid ranges and introduced Zircon, a new essential hearing aid family that also benefited from some of Oticon More's popular technology.

One of these bonus features is the MyMusic program feature, giving you a more premium music experience - ideal for music lovers.  More on this in the excerpt further down the page. This is the introductory performance level in the Zircon range, therefore you will lose some of the features found in Zircon 1 hearing aids.  You can view this range's full features set in this technology level here

Oticon Zircon 2 features 2.4 GHZ Bluetooth technology, various connectivity options, two rechargeable models and various fitting ranges.

Oticon Zircon 2 hearing aid styles

When breaking down the Oticon Zircon 2 hearing aid styles, there are two new miniBTE hearing aid styles, designed for those who are looking for a more discreet BTE device option.  Effectively this range supersedes the Ruby range.  However, if you have severe to profound hearing and need a power hearing aid, you would still need to look at Ruby's SP hearing solution, as Zircon currently doesn't offer this.

Oticon Zircon 2 hearing aids are available in two rechargeable models miniRIC R and miniBTE R and two traditional battery models - miniRIC T and miniBTE T.  There are also five colour choices available in this hearing aid range.  These are: Chroma beige, silver grey, steel grey, chestnut brown and diamond black.

Oticon Zircon 2 Bluetooth connectivity

Another benefit to Oticon Zircon 2 hearing aids is the 2-way streaming capabilities.  Giving you hands-free calls and videos using your iPhone devices and direct streaming with a selection of Android devices.  In theory, if your Android device supports ASHA protocol then you should be able to stream directly without any need for an additional accessory.

Our advice is that you check with your audiologist about smartphone and other devices' compatibility with the Zircon 2 hearing aids.  These hearing aids are also IP68 certified, which means they are resistant to dust and moisture.

What features do you lose when you compare Oticon Zircon 2 hearing aids with 1?

Speech understanding features and benefits:

  •  There is no OpenSound Navigator:  This technology is built around Oticon's BrainHearing philosophy and offers an open sound experience for its wearers.  Gaining access to 360-degree speech that is both clear and balanced without the distractions of background noise.  This is the most beneficial feature of the Zircon platform and if you can go for the premium product - Zircon 1 - we recommend that you do to take full advantage of this platform and this feature.
  • There is no Speech Guard:  This feature improves speech understanding in noisy and challenging listening environments.  This works really well alongside the OpenSound Navigator - making speech less distorted and greatly improving speech understanding.

Listening comfort features and benefits:

  • There is no Transient Noise Management:  This feature is created to make transient sounds more comfortable for the wearer.  Without this feature, transient sounds could be loud and/or abrasive.

However, you are still benefitting from all of the sound qualities features like processing channels and bass boost for streaming. As well as personalisation, optimised fitting features and the same connectivity with Zircon 2.  It is important that you speak with your local audiologist to go through what you want from your hearing aid, your level of hearing loss, lifestyle and more to determine which technology level best suits you.

Oticon Zircon Hearing Aids

Essential hearing aids with BrainHearing technology

Launched in March 2022, Oticon introduced Zircon hearing aids to the industry - their new essentials range, which effectively supersedes the Oticon Ruby.  However, if you have profound to severe hearing loss and looking for an essential line - the Ruby power device would still be your go-to product, as currently, Zircon doesn't offer this.

Oticon Zircon hearing aids, powered by the Polaris platform, also include some technical favourites seen in Oticon More - the BrainHearing technology and 360° speech are two great examples.  Offering clear sound and focus from all directions, even those challenging listening situations are benefiting here.

The Oticon Zircon hearing aids offer four hearing aid models and two technology levels.  These include the miniRITE T, miniRITE R, miniBTE T, miniBTE R, as well as technology levels 2 and 1.

On this page, we break down this hearing aid range's features vs benefits in the hope that it helps you get to know a little bit more about the product and also whether this hearing aid is ultimately right for you.  But first, let's take a look at Oticon Zircon hearing aid models.

Oticon Zircon miniRITE R rechargeable hearing aids

This is a small and discreet rechargeable hearing aid, enabling you to stream audio straight from your iPhone and selected Android devices.  The connectivity to Android devices is made possible because Zircon is compatible with the new Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids (ASHA) protocol.  This style is also powered by lithium-ion batteries with push-button and telecoil features.

Oticon Zircon miniBTE R rechargeable hearing aids

This hearing aid is a small rechargeable BTE that is known to 'fit most ears' and stream straight to your iPhone and selected Android Bluetooth devices.  This model is powered by lithium-ion batteries and includes a push-button and telecoil feature.

Oticon Zircon miniRITE T hearing aids

This is a small and discreet hearing aid with traditional disposable batteries and push-button for ease of use.  It allows streaming straight to your iPhone and selected Android devices.  It also includes a telecoil.

Oticon Zircon miniBTE T hearing aids

This hearing aid is a small traditional battery-operated hearing aid, with LED light for ease of use.  It includes a telecoil and a single push-button and a single push-button and can stream straight to your iPhone and selected Android Bluetooth devices.

Oticon Zircon Hearing Aids Features vs Benefits

360° sound with OpenSound Navigator

This is basically Oticon Zircon hearing aids powerful processing chip technology and is not often seen in an essential hearing aids range.  In fact, at launch, it will be the only essential hearing aid to offer this.  Along with BrainHearing technology - you get the benefits of an open sound experience.  Zircon hearing aids rebalances your sound from all directions and additionally reduces those unwanted background noises.

What does this mean for your hearing?  This technology feature keeps your speech clear, so your listening experience is more comfortable as you easily locate the direction of sound.  Because this common challenge is taken care of it enables you to switch your focus to what you want to hear - without any distractions.

Available on both technology levels?  No, just the Oticon Zircon 1 hearing aids.

Oticon Zircon Hearing Aids MyMusic Program

Again a feature that was introduced in the Oticon More hearing aid range, the MyMusic program is ideal for music lovers.

Previously, hearing aids often found providing high-quality music a challenge.  It didn't matter where the music was sourced, live or streamed, the problem still occurred.  Other hearing aids use the same signal processing methods they use for sound and apply it to music - the music could suffer.

Now, with Zircon's music-focused signal processing technology, you can now capture the complexities of music.  How do Oticon Zircon hearing aids do this?  This hearing aid adopts a new way of amplifying music to bring out those important details and nuances.  There is more balance across various frequencies, like high and low.  Preserving both soft and loud components within the music.

So regardless of hearing loss level, you can now enjoy a premium music experience.  You can watch the MyMusic program video further down the page.

Available on both technology levels? Yes.

Oticon Zircon Hearing Aids Bluetooth Connectivity

With Oticon Zircon hearing aids you can enjoy various Bluetooth hearing aid connectivity options.  Such as:

Oticon Zircon Hearing Aids Compatibility

iPhone compatibility:

Android compatibility:

Oticon Zircon Hearing Aids Rechargeability

Two solutions available:  There are two hearing aid charging solutions that you can choose from that are compatible with the Oticon Zircon digital hearing aids.  These are:

Standard desktop charger:  This system charges in just three hours and provides a full day of power - depending on streaming usage.  Also, a quick thirty-minute charge will provide an extra six hours of power.  Again this would depend on streaming usage.

Portable SmartCharger:  This system recharges Zircon hearing aids without power outlets.  In fact, you can get at least three full charges in one system charge.  It's ideal for those who travel a lot, offering convenience and reliability on the go.  There is also a hearing aid drying function, to take away any moisture you may have in your devices.  Again offering a quick thirty-minute charge for an extra six hours of power - depending on streaming usage.

Oticon Zircon hearing aid colours:  These hearing aids are available in chroma beige, silver grey, steel grey, chestnut brown and diamond black.

Are Oticon Zircon hearing aids compatible with any CROS solutions / single-sided deafness?  Yes, these hearing aids are compatible with both Oticon CROS PX and Oticon CROS.

Is this the best model for me?

If you are looking at this page then it is likely that an audiologist has suggested that you purchase this particular hearing aid, so is this the best model for you?

In general, any audiologist will always be recommending to you the model that best suits your needs. Here is a useful check list to make sure that is the case.

  • Audiologist level of knowledge. The audiologist you have seen will hopefully have a wide knowledge of all available hearing aids, however some will only be familiar with a small number of brands and therefore may not really be in a position to know which model is the best for you. It is OK to challenge their recommendation and ask them to justify why this particular brand is the one for you.
  • Do research. Read about the hearing aid that was recommended. Does it seem like it will suit your lifestyle? Does it have more or less features than you need?
  • Be aware of sales targets. Many high street retailers have specific tie-ins to a particular manufacturer/brand. The hearing aid they have suggested may still be the correct one for you, but do your research so that you know why they might have recommended it.

If in doubt, feel free to give us a call. That's what we're here for.

Do I need one hearing aid or two?

If you have a significant hearing loss in both ears, you should be wearing two hearing aids. Here are the audiological reasons why:

Localisation. The brain decodes information from both ears and compares and contrasts them. By analysing the miniscule time delays as well as the difference in loudness of each sound reaching the ears, the person is able to accurately locate a sound source. Simply put, if you have better hearing on one side than the other, you can't accurately tell what direction sounds are coming from.

Less amplification required. A phenomena known as “binaural summation” means that the hearing aids can be set at a lower and more natural volume setting than than if you wore only one hearing aid.

Head shadow effect. High frequencies, the part of your hearing that gives clarity and meaning to speech sounds, cannot bend around your head. Only low frequencies can. Therefore if someone is talking on your unaided side you are likely to hear that they are speaking, but be unable to tell what they have said.

Noise reduction. The brain has it’s own built in noise reduction which is only really effective when it is receiving information from both ears. If only one ear is aided, even with the best hearing aid in the world, it will be difficult for you to hear in background noise as your brain is trying to retain all of the sounds (including background noise) rather than filtering it out.

Sound quality. We are designed to hear in stereo. Only hearing from one side sounds a lot less natural to us.

What are the benefits of rechargeable hearing aids?

For most people, the main benefit of a rechargeable hearing aid is simple convenience. We are used to plugging in our phones and other devices overnight for them to charge up.

For anybody with poor dexterity or issues with their fingers, having a rechargeable aid makes a huge difference as normal hearing aid batteries are quite small and some people find them fiddly to change.

One downside is that if you forget to charge your hearing aid, then it is a problem that can't be instantly fixed. For most a 30 minute charge will get you at least two or three hours of hearing, but if you are the type of person who is likely to forget to plug them in regularly then you're probably better off with standard batteries.

Rechargeable aids are also a little bit bigger and are only available in behind the ear models.

Finally, just like with a mobile phone, the amount of charge you get on day one is not going to be the same as you get a few years down the line. Be sure to ask what the policy is with the manufacturer warranty when it comes to replacing the battery.

Are behind the ear aids better than in the ear aids?

For most people, the answer is yes. But it's never that simple.

The majority of hearing problems affect the high frequencies a lot more than the low ones. Therefore open fitting hearing aids sound a lot more natural and ones that block your ears up can make your own voice sound like you are talking with your head in a bucket. Therefore in-ear aids tend to be less natural.

However the true answer is we can't tell until we have had a look in your ears to assess the size of your ear canal, and until we have tested your hearing to see which frequencies are being affected.

People with wider ear canals tend to have more flexibility, also there are open fitting modular CIC hearing aids now that do not block your ears.

There is also the age old rule to consider, that a hearing aid will not help you if it's sat in the drawer gathering dust. If the only hearing aid you would be happy wearing is one that people can't see, then that's what you should get.

Most people can adapt to any type of hearing aid, as long as they know what to expect. Have an honest conversation with your audiologist as to what your needs are.

What are channels, and how many do I need?

Generally speaking, six or more. Unless it's none at all.

The number of channels a hearing aid has is often a simplistic way an audiologist will use to explain why one hearing aid is better than another, but channels are complex and it is really not that straightforward.

Hearing aids amplify sounds of different frequencies by different amounts. Most people have lost more high frequencies than low and therefore need more amplification in the high frequencies. The range of sounds you hear are split into frequency bands or channels and the hearing aids are set to provide the right amount of hearing at each frequency level.

Less than six channels and this cannot be done with much accuracy, so six is the magic number. However, a six channel aid is typically very basic with few other features and is suitable only for hearing a single speaker in a quiet room. The number of channels is not what you should be looking at, it's more the rest of the technology that comes with them.

As a final note, different manufacturers have different approaches. One method is not necessarily better than any other. For example some manufacturers have as many as 64 channels in their top aids. Most tend to have between 17 and 20. One manufacturer has no channels at all.
