What is the process of fitting a hearing aid?

They say that your ears never stop growing, so I was wondering how can you have hearing aids fitted properly then? I know that most modern hearing aids can be altered to adapt to your ear but I have a consultation with my audiologist this week and I just don’t know what to expect.

Do they measure your ear or do they try loads of different models to find the best fit?

Answer

The measurement of your ear, whether it is for a hearing aid in the ear or behind it, is the same. A soft, gooey impression material will be slowly syringed into your ear canal to make an ear mould. It becomes hard after a couple of minutes and the impression can be used to make a hearing aid or earpiece that fits exactly to your ear.

It doesn’t hurt but the sensation might feel a little strange- like you are under water.

Nowadays, most behind-the-ear devices are an instant fit so there is no need to make a bespoke ear mould. There are a vast range of shapes and sizes and they are very comfortable. The plus side; it means you won’t have to wait weeks on end for the earpiece to be manufactured. You can have it there and then!
