Can I buy a second hand hearing aid?

Money is tight and I know that there are risks involved, but I’ve been considering buying a used hearing aid instead of a brand new one. I need to save as much money as possible and the wear and tear can’t be that bad surely? Is it even possible to get second hand hearing aids?

 Answer

It is possible to purchase a used hearing aid but we strongly advise against it. It isn’t legal for a registered hearing aid audiologist to give you a second hand device and you need to take into account that it won’t be suitable for your individual needs.

Yes, you can probably pick up a cheap hearing aid on sites like eBay but it won’t match your hearing loss and it may not fit in your ear. Also, you need to ask yourself, where has it been?

So in short the answer is no- you should not buy a second hand hearing aid. Its condition will be poor and it is highly unlikely that it will fit in your ear comfortably. What’s more, the device will not have been programmed to meet your specific hearing loss and the amplification could damage your hearing and do it more harm.

If you want to save money, go to the NHS for reasonably priced hearing aids.
